ELKHART-  United Way of Elkhart County will launch  their 2016 fundraising campaign on August 26, 2015 with their annual event “The Great Cardboard Boat Race”.  All indications show that this year’s event will exceed all expectations with a record 30+ seaworthy cardboard ships!
Area companies will spend the next several weeks constructing boats out of cardboard, duct tape and polyurethane.  Some boats were created over morning coffee while others were mapped out on AutoCAD. Veteran crews will be returning with a whole new fleet of participants.
United Way of Elkhart County began this event seven years ago as a way to launch their fundraising campaign.  In the next several months following the race, United Way will raise money through an employee workforce campaign that partners with local companies.  The money raised in Elkhart County stays in this community and is used to advance the common good.  United Way’s focus is in providing services and support for working families in the areas of EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH.  The annual campaign generally yields about $2 million thanks to the over 6,000 local donors who are employed in 200 local companies.
“The Great Cardboard Boat Race”  sponsors this year include Fox 28, Centier Bank with additional sponsors Hawkins Water Tech, Himco and Welch Packaging.  Boat crews will be eligible to win trophies for Best In Race, Judges Choice, People’s Choice, LIVE UNITED spirit, Cardboard Crusader Race and the Wonder that Went Down Under.
The event is open to the public and will feature a tailgate type atmosphere with food trucks and a beverage stand.
It is anticipated that the race will draw the most spectators ever with over 1,500 people in attendance.  Teams will compete in heats with winners competing in several thrilling final heats.  During the final race, teams race down and retrieve a rubber ducky, circle a buoy and race for home.
Plan to join us for this exciting community event.
