Local business owner Alvaro Marquez is the winner of our Superhero Kick Off contest!
Alvaro and his wife, Catalina, chose Ribbon of Hope to receive a $5,000 grant from United Way. In 2012, Catalina was diagnosed with cancer. Ribbon of Hope helped the Marquez family with transportation, prayers and encouragement, and even provided gifts at Christmas time. Alvaro and Catalina were thrilled to give back to an organization that assisted them through a difficult time eight years ago.
Alvaro was one of eleven amazing people that were nominated as Superheroes, each with their own incredible story of generosity and heroism. We received over 700 votes via our website and Facebook page to help us select a single winner.
Alvaro received 5 separate Superhero nominations and nearly 300 votes. Here are some of the things his super fans had to say:
“Alvaro has so much love and compassion for the community. He is always there when someone needs it.”
“He is a tireless pillar of strength and compassion for the community.”
“Alvaro does not hesitate to use his resources and relationships to positively impact others.”
“Alvaro is the superhero for the marginalized!”
Alvaro played a large role in United Way's COVID response, opening up his business, The Arena, for five straight Saturdays as a distribution site for food giveaways to those who lost income due to the pandemic.
Thank you to all of our Superheroes, all of those who submitted nominations, and those who voted to help us select a winner! Check our Facebook page for pictures of the announcement and check presentation.
