DALY READING CAMP CELEBRATES
April 29 2009 DALY READING CAMP CELEBRATES ELKHART- In January 2009, a group of 100 volunteers made a commitment to help 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders at Mary Daly Elementary School improve their reading ability as an experiment and partnership with United Way of Elkhart County, CARES and Mary Daly Elementary School. Today, that experiment comes to an end with a celebration between the children and their adult volunteers to be followed by a formal honors assembly on Monday, May 4th. The experiment began due to United Way’s research and understanding that solid reading skills are the essential first steps to a high school diploma. More specifically, children who don’t read on grade-level by 4th grade are more likely to struggle academically. United Way, CARES and Mary Daly Elementary School worked together to recruit 100 community volunteers to work in intense reading teams with 33 students. Each student received 30 extra hours of reading practice, reinforcing their classroom lessons. Literacy assessments were conducted throughout the program to gauge progress. A statistical report on the students’ progress in the core reading areas of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary will be released at the honors assembly on Monday.
